Hummingbird House QLD
Design Brief:
Hummingbird House is a dedicated standalone respite and hospice facility established to be an Australian leader in paediatric palliative care. It is unique in Queensland offering a comprehensive
continuum of care to children and teens with life-limiting conditions and their families in a home-like environment.
The ethos of Hummingbird House is founded in the belief that, all children deserve the opportunity to learn, develop and grow no matter whether their lives are measured in days, weeks, months or years.
It is anticipated that through the services and facility of Hummingbird House, the quality of whatever time a child may have left will be enhanced and they will be empowered to live fully and joyfully.
The landscape brief was developed in conjunction with the client, representatives from end user groups and the consultant team.
Broad requirements were established to guide the landscape design:
-
A landscape that is far removed from a hospital setting;
-
A welcoming place with a relaxed, holiday home feel – “warm embrace”;
-
“The Big Back Yard” with places, activities, magic and surprise;
-
Access and views to landscape areas from every bed and room;
-
An outdoor environment that stimulates multi-sensory experiences;
-
Quiet spaces and individual reflection and peace with no distractions;
-
Gathering and outdoor eating spaces for being together as a family and socialising;
-
Organic, layouts, spaces and materials;
-
Creation of “Outdoor Rooms” within the landscape and
-
Retention and incorporation of existing trees wherever possible.
